The film takes place in a fairy-tale world, reminiscent of 19th-century Europe, where magic goes hand in hand with technical progress. The modest life of the early orphaned hatter Sophie completely changed when the walking castle of the mysterious wizard Howl, known for his “abductions” of girlish hearts, appeared in the vicinity of her city. Saved by this blue-eyed, handsome man from the harassment of two soldiers, she loved him at first sight, but the exciting walk with him cost the young hatter of her beauty and youth taken away by the spells of the jealous Witch from the Wasteland. The shocking transformation from an eighteen-year-old girl into a decrepit old woman made Sophie leave her home and go in search of the enchanting Witch so that she would return her normal look. Once on the road inside the stepping castle of Howl, the old girl remained to live with the owner and other inhabitants of this gigantic structure on chicken legs, having found a family in them, and in return giving them the warmth and wisdom of their loving heart.
