Charlie is a renowned theater director specializing in avant-garde plays and lives in New York City with his wife, Nicole. In the past she was a famous movie star, and more recently she has played in her husband's plays. They have a young son, Henry, who lives in the hectic pace of life of his parents, torn between household chores, rehearsals and Broadway premieres. At the beginning of the story, Nicole files for divorce and moves with her son to Los Angeles. The woman is convinced that she has “lost” her real self by adjusting to her husband.
